What is off-page SEO?

Off-page SEO can be contrasted to on-page and technical SEO. On-page SEO refers to the “things” one can easily change on a website, as long as one has access to the coding. Off-page SEO refers to “things” which are present on websites outside of the current website and are generally more difficult (read: takes more time=spend more money) to get done. Technical SEO refers to “things” one can do which will have an impact on the indexing and crawling of your website by search engines. 

On-page SEO refers to those factors which you can control on your own website, off-page SEO refers to the page ranking factors that are found outside your website, such as inlinks from another site. 

Off-page SEO is slightly more difficult to get done than on-page SEO, since one has to get things done on other websites, of which you are not the owner.

These are the elements of off-page SEO:

  1. Creating inlinks or backlinks. An inlink is simply a hyperlink from any other web page back to your web page. Creating inlinks is at the core of off-site SEO and is a technique that is crucial for any site with the aspiration of ranking on the first page of a search engine.
  2. Forum Postings.
  3. Guest Content.
  4. Social Media and Influencer Marketing.
  5. Local Listings.
  6. Content marketing.
  7. Citation building.
  8. Brand building.
  9. Podcasts.
  10. Reviews.
  11. Content Syndication.

It is easy to see where the name comes from – all the elements listed above exist on websites outside of your own website, hence the name “off-page SEO”. Off-page SEO assists in building your domain’s authority and its recognition.
